A photographer's portfolio shows you their best twenty photos. What it can't show you is how they'll handle the other two thousand — the early-morning muhurtham, the crowded stage, the relatives who arrive just as the light goes, and the hundred small moments in between.
That's what the right questions are for. Whether you're talking to us or to another studio, these are the twelve we'd ask if we were the ones getting married in Chennai — with an honest note on why each one matters, and how we answer it at McreatiK Studios.
Before you start: have these ready
Your date (or a shortlist of dates) and the venue, or at least the area.
The list of events you want covered — engagement, pre-wedding shoot, the wedding day, reception.
Three or four photos you love, from anywhere. They say more about your taste than any description.
1. Are you free on our date — for every event, not just the wedding?
A Tamil wedding is rarely one event. There's often a nichayathartham, a nalangu or mehendi, a reception the evening before or after, and a muhurtham that can start before sunrise. Confirm the photographer is available for all of them, at the actual times, not just "the wedding day".
How we answer: we check every event on your list against our calendar during the first conversation, so there are no surprises later.
2. Who will actually photograph our wedding?
Some studios send whoever is free on the day. Ask whose work you're looking at in the portfolio, and whether that same person will be behind the camera at your wedding.
How we answer: Mugundhan, who founded McreatiK Studios, leads every wedding personally — and for larger weddings, a second photographer joins so two angles are covered at once.
3. Can we see a full wedding, not just the highlights?
Anyone can post twenty great frames. A complete set from one wedding shows whether the photographer is consistent from the first ritual to the last guest photo — in harsh midday light, dim halls and crowded stages.
How we answer: you can browse complete event sets in our gallery — each post opens the full series, not a single hero shot — and flip through real printed albums we've designed.
4. Have you photographed Tamil wedding rituals before?
Knowing the order of a ceremony is what lets a photographer be in the right place before the moment happens. Depending on your family's traditions, that might mean the kasi yatra, maalai maatral, oonjal, kanyadaanam and — the one that can't be missed — the mangalya dharanam, the tying of the thali. Ask how they position themselves for it, especially when the mandapam is full.
How we answer: we walk through your ceremony's running order with you beforehand and mark the moments that matter most to your family, so we're in place before they happen.
5. Is your style candid, traditional — or both?
Candid photography catches unposed emotion; traditional photography makes sure every family group and ritual is properly recorded. Most Tamil weddings genuinely need both, and it's worth knowing how a photographer balances them. (We've written a separate guide on candid vs traditional photography for a Tamil wedding.)
How we answer: our wedding coverage is built to capture both the rituals and the moments happening in between — the posed family photos your elders expect, and the natural ones you'll treasure.
6. How will we plan the day together?
Good wedding photos are mostly planned. A photographer who asks for your timeline, the must-have shots and the names of key people will miss far less on the day.
How we answer: after your enquiry, we have a planning call to lock the date, locations and a shot list, so everyone knows what to expect on the day. Then we shoot at a relaxed pace, so the moments stay natural rather than staged.
7. What exactly is included?
"Wedding photography" can mean very different things. Ask for the deliverables in writing: edited digital photos, a printed album, same-day highlights, how many hours of coverage, and how many events.
How we answer: you choose the deliverables the wedding needs — edited digital photos, a printed album, same-day highlights — and the quote lists exactly what's included.
8. How is the price worked out — and what's the payment schedule?
Be wary of a single number with no breakdown. Ask what drives the price, what costs extra (additional events, extra hours, travel and stay outside the city), and when payments are due.
How we answer: pricing depends on three things — the type of session, the hours and number of locations, and the deliverables you choose — and we send a clear quote once we know your plan. We cover Chennai, Tamil Nadu and nearby states: for weddings outside Chennai, travel is quoted separately and the couple arranges our stay. Payment is simple — a 50% advance confirms your date, and the balance is due when your photos are delivered.
9. How many photos will we get, and when?
More isn't always better: a thousand edited, carefully chosen photos beat five thousand near-duplicates. Ask how photos are selected and edited, and when you'll receive them.
How we answer: every photo is reviewed, culled and edited for colour, light and detail before it reaches you, and final photos are delivered digitally, ready to share or print. Your full edited set arrives within 2–3 weeks of the wedding.
10. Can you design our wedding album?
An album is the version of your wedding most people will actually look at for decades. Ask who designs it, whether you can review the layout before printing, and how many changes are included.
How we answer: we design albums spread by spread so the story reads in order — you can see examples on our albums page. You review the layout before anything is printed, with two rounds of changes included.
11. What happens if something goes wrong?
Cameras fail and people fall ill. A professional should be able to answer this without hesitating: backup equipment, backup memory cards, and a plan if they personally can't make it.
How we answer: our cameras record every photo to two memory cards at the same time, and we copy the files to a separate drive on the same day — so a failed card never means lost photos.
12. Will you post our photos online?
Many photographers share their work — that's how you found them. But it's your wedding, and you should get a say.
How we answer: we may feature photographs in our portfolio, gallery and social media, but if you ask us in writing to keep them private — or to remove them later — we will. It's in our Terms of Service.
